A DIFFERENT APPROACH

The Singapore approach to Maths and Science excellence employs a step-by-step spiral technique, with basic concepts revisited repeatedly, at a higher level each time. It lends itself easily to teaching techniques in Australia and New Zealand.

The technique imparts critical thinking skills including classifying, comparing, sequencing, induction, deduction & spatial visualisation, analysing parts & whole, identifying patterns & relationships, using before-after concepts, guess & check, estimation, suppositions & simplifications.

It employs diagrams and models as well as increasingly complex word problems and concepts, often in real-life situations, to anchor basic skills & problem solving strategies. It teaches different ways to approach maths & science problems, e.g. how to do math fractions, avoiding rigid application of standard formulas or techniques.

A key principle is to lay out each topic with a rich supply of exercises & word problems, in the process enabling students to make important self-discoveries – “Oh, that's why!

Impressed by Singapore's results in international rankings of Maths and Science excellence, the Massachusetts Department of Education in the US was among the first to adopt the new techniques.

"I've seen kids go a long way with Singapore," said a North Middlesex teacher. "Even those that came to class at the beginning of the year with math phobias are up to speed."  To better gauge the program's success, the North Middlesex school district has joined with Stanford University to develop an assessment test that they hope will further support what they already believe.

Richard Bisk, a maths professor at Worcester State College, believes the Singapore system empowers students while giving them a solid mix of basic skills and critical thinking. He adds that "it's relatively easy to follow and use because of its focus on understanding mathematical concepts. The model-drawing technique aids in this process and provides a powerful strategy for problem solving and for preparing students for the study of algebra."

"Our students are doing advanced math and are learning much more than we ever thought students could learn," said school district Assistant Superintendent Mary Waight.

The Singapore books and techniques are now being used in some 140 US schools, and an increasing number of countries worldwide, including Australia and New Zealand.

Our Singapore Workbooks  - Maths help & Science for kids

Ideal for home study, they stress students' foundation skills, introducing 1st graders to basic concepts concretely, using models, counting blocks and pictures. Students as young as 2nd grade begin learning multiplication and division, and start performing simple pictorial algebra by 4th grade.

Our workbooks come in graduated series from 1st grade through early secondary school, often including worked examples to help your child understand new concepts. They provide a rich supply of sequenced word problems and exercises to reinforce concepts and skills.

Children are gradually introduced to often threatening concepts such as algebra, not realising that’s what they are encountering. Importantly, the workbooks are designed to provide fun and excitement through the use of lively and colourful pictures and activities.                     View samples
