The Balanced Child was established in 2005 by Cherian Thomas, a business consultant, because of his own children's experience with the Singapore education system, in particular its approach to Maths & Science for children. He believes strongly that the value of the Singapore experience can and should be shared with children everywhere, particularly given the increasing importance of these critical life skills.
Cherian and his wife have two children who spent their first few years in the Singapore primary school system before they moved to Australia. That grounding has given the children a headstart in Australia, and they have both won scholarships to two of the premier private schools in Melbourne. A key element of their success has been their use of Maths, Science and English supplementary workbooks based on the Singapore curriculum….’fondly’ referred to as ‘Funwork’ at home, as distinct from Homework brought back from school.
Maths and Science are disciplines that commonly generate anxiety among children, often even among their parents. Many children divert to other learning pursuits in their teens, needlessly in many cases, simply to get away from their discomfort with these subjects. However, if handled with thought and care, particularly in the early learning years, most children grow to be at ease with these subjects, viewing them as useful and indispensable skills for everyday life.
Parents have a key role to play in their children’s success, and it takes only an additional half-hour of ‘Funwork’ a day….to keep school blues at bay.
The Balanced Child has established firm partnerships with publishers in Singapore who specialise in the Singapore Maths, Science & English workbooks, with the prime purpose of bringing the benefits of these books to children in Australia and New Zealand.
